bday invite, year two
Like the holiday cards, I sometimes make linocut birthday invites for my son's birthday. This was the one for his second birthday, held at a gymboree.

on the stoop
On the way to the Whale Playground, we picked up a few DVDs at a sidewalk sale, a buck a pop. Space Chimps for my son, Mario Bava's Planet of the Vampires for me, Brothers Grimm for the heck of it, and the guy threw in a VHS copy of some Jules Verney movie I don't know, Island at the Top of the World, which I hope is somewhere in the same league as At the Earth's Core and fun stuff like that.

Mush, mush, mush all the way
Good sledding yesterday, and not a single fused vertebrae to speak of, although I am a little stiff today. Afterward, my son slurped hot chocolate, holding the cup with frozen fingers, and ate his weight in marshmallows, and later that afternoon I nearly fell asleep while reading to him in bed, but hey, (finger pop) that all adds up to one grade A, killer snow day, cowboy. We also watched a little Noggin and some Looney Tunes, and I made a big pot of turkey sausage, black bean and quinoa soup.
Speaking of eating....
A new link to the right: a blog from a friend and neighbor about cooking, called "What's Cooking at Jerk Castle...recipes two amateur cooks are trying at home." They are great neighbors, and I will definitely be trying out some of the recipes my own self.

Fade to black
I am taking down my paintings today. It was a good long six week run, and a nice shot in the arm. Have a bunch of new work going in the studio and may spend a couple days running off some monotypes some time this spring.

More about the show
You can see more photos of the exhbition here: http://picasaweb.google.com/packyjewell/Resnickshow#
As you tell, it's in a kind of strange exhibition space, a set of glass cases running along the wall of a hallway. The glass can be a little annoying, but not as bad as I'd feared. And it is a kind of crossroads between three or four campus buildings, so it gets a lot of traffic, and the six-week run helps a lot, too. The show has generated a nice amount of buzz on campus, making me feel like a small celebrity around here. I've been a little touched by the kind words and good wishes from all corners of campus, and from both friends and strangers.

About last night
The reception for my show was last night, and it was fun. I have a love-hate relationship with these kinds of things, but this one went very well. And I'm relieved it's now officially yesterday. The show runs for another month, and it seems to have already generated a nice little buzz around campus. People have been very kind from all quarters: friends, colleagues, acquaintances, and strangers. I suppose I really should try to do these sorts of things more often. You know, get the work out of the studio. He said, tongue in cheek. Soon will post pics of the installation and maybe even video. Stay tuned, sportsrockers, as my brother would say.

Happy birthday to me
Recently celebrated a birthday. I have entered what I'll refer to as my "Tom Seaver" year.
Some news for the New Year:
We had a great trip to Ohio for the holidays. Some highlights to come.
I have a little show coming up at LIU that will run from January 20 to the end of February. It will be small to easel sized, monochromatic, b movie paintings, mounted in the Resnick gallery showcases.
Our son starts kindergarten in the fall.
Saw a bunch of old old friends in Toledo. High school football teammates, whom I've missed more than I realized. Highlights of that to come, too. A resolution would be to keep in better touch with the old gang.
Got a flip camera for Christmas, very cool. And a few more volumes of Looney Tunes on dvd. also cool.

a few quick Christmas thoughts
Elf is an excellent Christmas movie, and I bet I'll still be watching it ten years from now. That's right, it will be a Classic. Great Rankin/Bass touches. Speaking of, I watched a few Rankin/Bass things this year, and boy, some of them are trippy and strange in places.
Lots of little articles lately about the darkness of It's a Wonderful Life. Duh. I love that movie and I don't care who knows it.
A Christmas Story is great, but I'm conflicted about the 24 hour marathon.
Macy's does a great job with the whole Santaland thing. We took our son this past Saturday and were only on line for twenty minutes. The Saturday before Christmas. Very cool. Last year it was more than an hour.
I will improve [have improved [3/11/09] the quality of the holiday card pics, but am glad I put them up, even in the less than perfect photos that they are [were], because it's good to see them all in one place, and I've enjoyed going back and thinking a little about what went into each one.
Driving to Toledo for Christmas. Wish us luck.
